Perth Safety Switch FAQs
Why Are RCDs So Important?
Residual current devices (RCDs) are the most effective measure to prevent electrocutions, serious electrical injuries, and fires.
While circuit breakers and fuses in your switchboard protect against overloading and short circuits, they do not protect against electrocution. An RCD is the best device to protect you and your family from electrocution.
To make Perth homes and businesses safer, it is essential to have at least two of these life-saving safety switches fitted to your premises.
How many RCD's Do I Legally Require?
A minimum of two RCDs must be installed to protect all power and lighting circuits in a residential property before it can be sold and the transfer of title can take place. Penalties apply if RCDs are not fitted and the land title is transferred to another person.
If a property is intended to be demolished, the seller is not required to install RCDs at the point of sale. The buyer must provide written notice to the seller, stating that the property will be demolished within six months of the transfer. If the property is not demolished within six months, the buyer must then install the required number of RCDs. Failure to do so puts the buyer in breach of the regulations.
What types of RCDs are there?
An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety device that prevents electrocution by cutting the electricity supply immediately. It works by ensuring that the electricity flowing into a circuit is equal to the current flowing out. When you receive a shock, it means an electrical current has passed through your body to the ground.
Circuit Breakers – Circuit breakers and fuses are designed to protect electrical cables and fittings in the home from overloading and short circuits. They cut the power when too much current flows through the wiring, preventing electrical fires, but not electrocution.
Combination RCDs – Homeowners can opt to install combination RCDs, which merge the functions of circuit breakers and RCDs. These devices protect electrical circuits and appliances, prevent electrocution, and are ideal for meter boxes with limited space.
What types of safety switches are available?
You can use standard RCDs, or combination devices that combine circuit-breaker features with RCD protection. The latter are useful when switchboard space is limited.
Can I test RCDs myself?
Yes. Each safety switch has a “Test” button which homeowners should press every six months. We also offer a full professional inspection of your electrical system.
Do you charge a callout fee or have surprise costs?
No. We provide a free safety and compliance inspection with every service, have $0 callout fees, and use upfront pricing.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. Our RCD and safety switch services come backed by a workmanship guarantee.
What service types do you provide?
We install new safety switches, replace or upgrade faulty or outdated ones, and perform RCD testing.
