What’s involved in repairing a split-system?

Find out what the system is doing

We start with the symptoms. Is the air conditioner not turning on, blowing but not cooling, leaking water, making unusual noises, tripping the power or displaying an error code? Understanding what has changed gives us a useful starting point.
Inspect the indoor and outdoor units

A split system has two sides to the story. We inspect the relevant indoor and outdoor components, looking for obvious signs of damage, contamination, deterioration or anything else that could be contributing to the problem.
Check airflow and cleanliness

Restricted airflow can significantly affect performance. Filters, coils and other internal areas can accumulate dust and debris, so we check whether cleaning or airflow issues are contributing to the symptoms.
Check the electrical components

Depending on the fault, we can inspect the electrical supply, connections and relevant components to determine whether an electrical issue is preventing the system from operating correctly.
Check the drainage

If the indoor unit is dripping or leaking, we’ll investigate the condensate drainage and related components to determine where the water is coming from and why it isn’t draining as intended.
Diagnose the underlying fault

Rather than replacing parts based purely on the symptoms, we work through the possible causes to identify what’s actually wrong with the system. The same symptom can have several potential causes, which is why proper fault finding matters.
Explain what we’ve found

Where repair is practical and appropriate parts are available, the required work can be carried out. Depending on the fault, this may involve electrical components, controls, drainage or other parts of the system.
Clean where required

If dirt or buildup is affecting operation, relevant components may also need cleaning as part of getting the system back into better working condition.
Test the system

Once repairs are complete, we run the air conditioner and check its operation to make sure the original problem has been addressed and the system is heating or cooling as expected.

Not every ageing split system is worth pouring money into. If the repair is substantial and the unit is already nearing the end of its useful life, we’ll explain the situation so you can compare repairing it against replacing it with a newer system.
